UPDATE: The U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in all 50 states on June 26, engendering outrage, particularly in the Bible Belt. Mississippi threatens to end marriages altogether. Two archived radio shows expose the hypocrisy of so-called Christians who oppose gay marriages but not fornication, adultery, mass incarceration, lynchings, and executions. The "NNIA1" tapes are available at Blogtalkradio for listening any time:

Original Article
My reservation about legalizing gay marriage has always been the opportunity that this would present to penalize religious people of various faiths (and not Christians only) who feel that participating in gay marriages is wrong. I believe strongly in individual liberty and feel that consenting adults should have the right to do as they please, but I understand that legalizing gay marriage can cause infringements on millions of people's religious rights if their jobs or businesses are affiliated with marriages. People should not be coerced into violating their religious principles in order to keep their incomes. I have given thought to what would be fair to people on both sides of the issue: gay couples who want to marry and the religious judges, florists, and bakers who work in the marriage industry and object to such marriages. Some people compare gay marriages to interracial marriages, which were also illegal at one time. I do not agree.
I see this is a human rights and constitutional rights issue regarding the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Free exercise of one's religion must include the right to refrain from doing such things that one perceives to be violations of the dictates of his/her religion. Therefore, I suggest that persons who stand on their religious convictions against participating in gay marriages should have a way to abstain legally as CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS. I would assert that along with making gay marriages legal, decision makers must also respect conscientious objectors' First Amendment rights to abstain from participating on religious grounds without suffering financial persecution.
Governments should issue a process for individuals, religious institutions, and corporations to apply for and be granted the status of "conscientious objectors" who are legally excused from participating in gay marriages. I believe that is the only way to be fair to everyone: gay couples and religious organizations and individuals who work or own businesses related to the marriage industry. There is no law saying "conscientious objectors" status must be reserved for military service. Governments should not legislate morality for people on either side of the gay marriage issue. Please consider this suggestion. Your comments are invited below.
Note: I originally wrote this suggestion at a "World News Daily" article entitled "Christians Facing New Status as 'Hated Minority.'" The government has long given room for people who object to laws on a religious basis to be excused from participating in actions that they consider as being violations of their religious principles. Rather poor set of priorities if you ask me. Denying some people a chance to get married because it COULD lead to restrictions on other people's religious liberties. That is not defense of personal liberty. that is willful perversion of the value for the clear purpose of restricting the rights of those most affected.
ReplyDeletenorthierthanthou, you did not read this article with understanding. I wrote that gay people should be allowed to marry and that people who object to such marriages and work or have businesses in the marriage industry should be allowed to register as "conscientious objectors" and legally refrain from participating in gay marriages without any financial repercussions. Any questions?

Politics is as a Sea that will never be calm .. Constitutional moderate is where I stand , a member of a Republic . Bureaucrat's transient and career , representatives of Bureaucracy who unelected by the people hold sway over this Republic , them I hold at arms length . Uphold the Constitution & Bill of Rites or stay out of my ear .
ReplyDeleteInteresting comment, Ronnal Scammahorn. I'm not sure what, if anything, it has to do with "Conscientious Objectors to Gay Marriages," but I'm impressed that the stalkers let you comment. Blessings.
